A softener allows the transformation of hard water into softened water (hard water being characterized by its calcium and magnesium carbonate content). Water also contains dissolved mineral salts. Hard water, passing over a bed of cationic resin, exchanges calcium ions and magnesium ions for sodium ions. Hard water thus deprived of its calcium and magnesium ions becomes soft. Regeneration is the phase which allows the resins to be regenerated by recharging them with sodium, and by eliminating the calcium and magnesium carbonates captured during passage over the resins. Regeneration is achieved by counter-current rinsing of the resins.
